Four weeks

It's still July, but I have four full weeks of retirement / unemployment under my belt. All the conference calls and emails are distant memories and it feels good! Except for some final details of the acquisition that have required attention, I haven't thought about Trustgenix or HP at all.

Most days this summer, in California, have started with either a run (with Rosie) and then coffee or coffee and then a hike (with an off leash Rosie). From there I enjoy the morning on the patio and then tackle some work around the house or, lately, preparation for burning man. Afternoons I walk downtown or I get out and run errands.

One more week and then it's back to Texas and a new routine. I won't do much running in Texas this time of year, but there is a nice off leash hiking trail, in the woods along a stream, that I expect we'll frequent.

Tick!

When we got to Redding I noticed a tick on Rosie. She probably got it at Pulgas Ridge this morning.

Beth suggested smothering it in vaseline and that seemed to do the trick. You can't tell from this blury photo but it came out intact. In fact, I'm not sure that it had even bitten her yet.

66 miles to go

Sent from the road as Rosie and I drove up to Redding. Leaving before noon makes all the difference in avoiding traffic out of San Francisco.

Danger Update

I've been building cardboard models to explore the various ways to cut the faces of a triangular pyramid out of a sheet of plywood.

Tom worked out the equations to calcuate the angle between the faces so that I can figure out how to actually build these things. It turns out that the model on the left has perfect 90 degree angles between the faces, which would make it easy to build, but I think I like the look of the model on the right better. It has 112 degree angles between the faces.

Travel Sleep Calculator

Here's a javascript calculator for a formula that I came up with to calculate how many hours to sleep on a plane in order to avoid jet lag. It has worked well for me but it does assume that you can sleep on planes. I guess some people can't.

hours short on sleep at start:

hours of travel:

hours awake at destination:

hours to sleep on plane

The formula is based on the premise that we need to sleep 1 hour for every 2 hours that we are awake. In other words, we need to sleep 1/3 of the time or 8 hours per night.

The formula takes three inputs:

  1. the number of hours short of a full night's sleep that you are starting your trip with. For example, if you went to bed at 10pm but got up 4am to catch your flight, then you would have a starting sleep deficit of 2 hrs. If you got a full night's sleep then you have a starting sleep deficit of 0.

  2. the number of hours that your trip takes (from the time that you get up until you reach your destination). For example, if you get up at 4am for a flight that leaves at 6am and is 12 hours long, then your travel time would be 14 hours. For trips that start later in the day, just include the hours from when you wake up until your flight leaves.

  3. the number of hours from when you arrive at your destination until your normal bedtime (in the destination timezone). For example, if you arrive at 5pm local time and normally go to bed at 10pm, then use 5 hours.

The number of hours to sleep on the plane is then calculated by adding your starting sleep deficit to 1/3 of your travel time and then adjusting for the number of hours that you will be awake at your destiantion before going to bed (at a normal time). If you will be awake a full 16 hours then no adjustment is made. If you will only be awake 6 hours, then 5 hours of sleep will be subtracted (1 hour of sleep for every 2 hours that you are short of a full day awake).

Keg Tapped

Robert is in town so I went ahead and tapped the keg so we could sample our new batch. It's only been on the CO2 for two days, and it's still a little flat, but it tastes good!

Danger Update

I bench tested the electronics for the proximity alarm today -- everything worked as expected and I was able to program the messages that I wanted!

Kegged

The beer is in the keg! And the CO2 tank wasn't empty, so it should be carbonated in a few days.

Dangerous Eggs

Beth's brother is in town for the weekend and they're cooking up some tapas from a cookbook that we bought in Barcelona (written in Spanish).

One of the recipes calls for huevos batidos... sounds like beaten?

Hmm, google translate spits out dangerous eggs!

A google search found the answer:

Egg Wash - A mixture consisting of beaten egg(s) (whole eggs, whites, or yolks) and a liquid (usually milk, cream, or water) that is brushed on the top of baked goods before baking to give them a glossy sheen and to aid in browning to produce a crisp outer crust. Can also be used to keep toppings such as nuts, poppy or sesame seeds, or sugars in place while they bake or to join layers of pastry so they do not separate during baking.

Burning Man 2007 - 50 days until the man burns!

I finally started preparing for Burning Man this week!

My biggest accomplishment was deciding on an art project. It's called Danger and this is a (non)artists rendering of what it will look like on the playa. It will have a dual zone proximity alarm inside it that first warns people away and then sounds a klaxon (using car alarm parts purchased on ebay). More details to come...

Beer update

The fermentation had quieted down so I transferred it to the carboy to settle. Time to go refill the CO2 tank so we can keg!

First week with my iPhone

Overall, it's fantastic!

The screen is beautiful. Scrolling, zooming and clicking are all intuitive, fast and smooth. Typing is better than I expected and quite usable. The camera is great and the ipod and phone are... well, an ipod and a phone. Just what you'd expect.

I had already switched to AT&T (because I was doing a lot of international travel and wanted a GSM phone), so the fact that they are the only provider was a non-issue for me. Coverage could be better but the same is true of Verizon, my old carrier. What would be great is if everyone used the same technology so that we'd all have better coverage!

How I'm using it, roughly in order of time spent:
- email (through my gmail account)
- reading news (when I'm waiting in line or havng coffee, or even at home when I'm not at the computer)
- phone calls
- taking pictures and blogging them
- calendar and maps (for driving directions to appointments)
- ipod

Three biggest complaints:

1) No way (that I've found) to link to google maps from a calendar appointment

2) No way to upload photos via the web browser when creating blog posts (it is possible to email them, however, so I've been blogging via the email interface and that works)

3) No chat application (no, I don't count SMS as chat)

Rosie's big day

Today was Rosie's evaluation for acceptance at the local doggie day care / boarding place. On the theory that a tired dog is a good dog we started the day off at Pulgas Ridge, followed by an early afternoon walk, and finally our 3pm appointment.

They took a very systematic approach to the evaluation, seeing how she reacts in different situations and with different archetypes of dogs... and she passed with flying colors! Apparently she is very well socialized and communicates well, both giving and receiving cues to avoid escalations.

Day three - puttering around the house

Yesterday was a holiday so I took the day off. ;-)

Today, day three, the real work began... I had been putting off starting on the long list of "chores" that need doing around the house, choosing instead to focus on fun stuff like setting up this blog, playing with my iphone, upgrading our wireless router so that I can get a signal on the back patio (where I'm sitting now enjoying a cool breeze)... but today I dove in (well, except for that three hour lunch break with Dave and Atul).

It doesn't feel like I accomplished all that much (sorted through accumulated mail, caught up on bills, mapped the sprinkler stations so that I can adjust the timer program, did some research on repairing the damage rosie has done by peeing on our nice new lawn, started looking at what needs to be done to get our hot tub back in shape), but its a start and I figure I should pace myself. The way I'm looking at it, being retired is like having a whole week full of weekends -- and like any good weekend day, chores should be balanced with fun.

Day one - coffee and a crossword

Day one - coffee and a crossword
Originally uploaded by grwster

After a busy weekend including a combination birthday (Beth) and retirement (me) BBQ, buying an iPhone at 10:30pm Friday night (no line!), Owen's little league all star game, dog parks and off-leash hiking with Rosie, looking at property in the hills, brewing beer... I decided to take it easy this morning.

So, after dropping Beth at the airport and taking Rosie for a short run, we headed downtown for coffee and a crossword.

Ah... how long will it last?
